Ubuntu - Ngororero Washing Station sits in Ngororero district, an area still fairly new to coffee, better known for mining, though the local government has been pushing cultivation in recent years. Ubuntu Coffee Company is less than a year old here, but we've already built solid relationships with our farmers. The station sources cherries from 1800-2100masl, and we stay open and keep buying through the season so farmers at higher altitudes, where cherries take longer to ripen, know they have our support to keep growing coffee. We selected only the ripest red cherries at peak harvest, when mucilage and brix were highest, placed them in tanks and inoculated with native yeast from the area, then pulped and slow dried in shade.

About the Farm
Aloys has been growing coffee on his family plot for around 10
years. His 3 hectares sit between 1800-2100masl, and he grows only
Red Bourbon. We chose to isolate her coffee for this lot because of
where his land sits — right in that altitude sweet spot that
gives the cherries more time to develop.
Aloys takes exceptional care of her plantation. During the dry
months he plants cover crops, both to give himself an extra source
of income and, just as importantly, to keep his soil from drying
out when the rains stop. It's the kind of long-term thinking that
shows in the cup. he's also meticulous at harvest — only
picking fully ripe red cherries, and floating them himself before
delivery to make sure only the best make it to the station.
We're incredibly proud to work with Aloys, and even prouder that
his coffee is part of our winning lot. We're looking forward to
growing this relationship for many harvests to come.
