Kabyiniro coffee is 100% red bourbon-arabica coffee grown in Muhororo Sector, Ngororero District in Western Province of Rwanda. The area experiences tropical climate of high altitude varies between 1,700-1,950m above sea level. It is one of Rwanda regions which have high rainfall with an annual average temperature varying from 16°C to 21°C. Annual rain falls ranging from 1,100 to 1,500 mm, thus these features are favourable to coffee development.
Coffee cherries are harvested by hand by farmers themselves, but at the peak of season temporary pickers are hired for speeding up the harvest, thus increasing income for workers in the area.
In this anaerobic natural processing, the well sorted and floated coffee cherries are fermented between 24–48 hours, but it can extend up to 72 hours depending on the weather conditions. After fermentation, after that they are dried on raised bed on sun. To avoid mold taste and other unwanted fermentation, the cherries are turned regularly every 30-40 minutes.

Cupping notes: A smooth and elegant coffee with a structured body, featuring tamarind and vibrant purple fruits. Notes of raisins, hazelnuts, cinnamon, and milk chocolate create depth, complemented by tropical stone fruits, pineapple, mango, and golden kiwi. Bright honeyed yellow fruits mingle with brown sugar, grape, and banana juice, accented by sophisticated hints of champagne, rose wine, mulled spice, and sugarcane. A beautifully balanced cup with tartaric acidity and sweetness.

Producer Story:

Mudacumura Alphonse represents farmers groups located in, Muhororo Sector, Ngororero District, in Rwanda’s Western Province. This region is blessed with a tropical climate and high altitudes ranging from 1,700 to 1,950 meters above sea level. The area enjoys abundant rainfall, between 1,100 and 1,500 mm annually, and moderate temperatures from 16°C to 21°C, creating perfect conditions for growing high-quality coffee.

After years of working closely with Tropic Coffee, Mudacumuraand his members learned the secrets of producing premium coffee. His hard work paid off when his coffee achieved a remarkable cupping score above 87, earning him a high-stand status in the coffee community. Inspired by this success, the groups brought together small farmers in the area to form a strong cooperative. Together, they aimed to set an example for coffee farmers nationwide.

Their dedication and teamwork have been recognized with multiple awards, including the prestigious BOR 2024. Every season, they carefully prune old coffee trees and plant new ones, ensuring a consistent harvest of ripe red cherries. This disciplined approach has not only improved the quality of their coffee but also boosted their financial stability.

With growing profits, Mudacumura and the cooperative have started to support the community. They are helping children who had to drop out of school due to lack of fees return to education. Their story is one of resilience, unity, and hope showing how passion for coffee can transform lives and inspire others.
