Producer Story:
High in Rwanda's Northern Province, nestled on the volcanic slopes of Gakenke District at elevations of 1,700 to 2,300 meters, lies the Twongerekawa Coko Washing Station. "Twongere" means "supporting each other" in Kinyarwanda—a name that perfectly captures this Fair Trade and Organic-certified cooperative's spirit.
Established in 2009 by eleven female coffee farmers, the cooperative has grown to encompass over 1,200 smallholder farmers, with women comprising the vast majority. The washing station, built and operated predominantly by women since 2013, stands as a shining example of women-led excellence in specialty coffee production and environmental stewardship.
Under management by twelve dedicated members (eight women, four men), Twongerekawa Coko has earned recognition as a small cooperative with outsized impact on quality and community development. Each farmer manages an average plot of just 1.3 hectares, yet together they create something extraordinary.
Their Red Bourbon Arabica thrives on mineral-rich volcanic, schist, and sandstone soils. The exceptionally high altitude allows for slow ripening and intense flavor development. Coffee is processed using the fully washed method with innovative water-saving Colombian machine washers—testament to their commitment to quality and environmental sustainability.
Meticulous processing involves careful depulping, precisely controlled fermentation, and exacting grading practices. The result is elegant, expressive coffee showcasing unique high-altitude terroir, with cup profiles revealing notes of white peach, lemon cake, black tea, green apple, and chocolate—a vivid expression of Gakenke's exceptional growing conditions and organic cultivation methods utilizing natural fertilizers like manure and coffee pulp mulching.
The cooperative's mission extends beyond coffee production, aiming to alleviate poverty among 800+ smallholder farmers through Fair Trade premiums and sustainable development practices. Twongerekawa Coko symbolizes community-led development—in each cup, you taste not just Rwanda's highland terroir purity, but the collective craftsmanship of women supporting each other in pursuit of excellence.
